Priya, catching the day as it passes

I am Priya. I grew up in Singapore and have lived in the north-central heartlands for most of my adult life — first in Bishan with my parents, now at Blk 447 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 where the corridor catches the afternoon sun and someone is always frying something two doors down.

I work part-time doing accounts for a small tuition centre near AMK Hub. The hours are regular enough that I can run errands in the mornings when I want to, take the long way to the wet market when the direct route feels too rushed, and sit at the neighbourhood coffee shop with kopi before the lunch crowd arrives. On other days I help my mother with groceries, hang laundry on the poles, and walk the park connector when I cannot decide whether to turn the fan back on.

DailyDrift started because I kept losing the small parts of days — the auntie who points toward the right queue, the extra block on a market run, the click when the ceiling fan finally stops.

What I write

My entries are plain on purpose. I am not a reporter or a critic. I do not rank hawker stalls or tell you what you must see. I write about what I notice on my routes — Ang Mo Kio to Bishan, the void deck after the cleaners pass, the bus stop where I let whichever service arrives first choose my afternoon. If you read here, you are reading a personal record, not advice.

How I write

I write in English because it is the language my notes live in, though Tamil and a little Mandarin colour how I hear things on the street. Some sentences come out flat. That is fine. Honesty matters more to me than polish.

When I am not writing, I read library books returned late without shame, mend buttons on school uniforms for my niece, and call a friend in Toa Payoh who always asks whether I have eaten. Sometimes those calls become entries weeks later, when a detail returns like an item you forgot was on the shopping list.

Disclaimer

What you read on DailyDrift is my personal writing — my own experiences, opinions and memories as they were when I wrote them. I describe places and moments from my own angle; I do not name or speak for other people, and I try to write about my neighbourhood with care.
